Comprising 25 books, this work consists of 12,860 still images from a televised performance illustrating Roberta Flack’s 1969 recording of “Ballad of the Sad Young Men.”
Amazing Grace, 2004. This is the first volume of a 10 1/2 volume book of screenshots from iTunes’s EQ visualizer illustrating Meryl Streep singing “Amazing Grace.” In the movie Silkwood, the lead character, Karen (played by Ms. Streep) sings the song while driving from Texas to Oklahoma in her white Honda. In the end Karen is killed in a car crash and her best friend Dolly (played by Cher) cries.
Throughout the years I’ve collected phrases. They roll around in my mind, words (both profound and mundane) conversations with allies. The ones I remember most clearly are attached to moments shared with friends and lovers. I’ve written them down, always with the thought of using them for titles of works of art. What is clear to me now is that these titles will not become attached to any series. They, and the stories behind them, are the work. This is book one of three.
